The Triple-Threat of Nationalism

Source: http://www.everythingulster.com/blogs/index.php/everythingulster/2006/11/14/the_triple_threat_of_nationalism

Excerpt:
The Scottish people have always boxed above their weight within the United Kingdom, it’s in both Scotland’s and the nation’s long-term interest that this situation continues.

Comment Excerpt:
But, we've boxed severely under our weight in the world. And quite frankly, I'd rather be boxing on the world stage rather than in some parrocial regional constest. I feel confident that Scotland will win her independence. Too much has happened over the last 20 to 30 years that "Britain" did that was not in Scotland's interest. Scotland needs its own voice.

Should Scotland go it alone?

Excerpt:
But enough of the SNP - my view on an independent Scotland is mixed. On the one hand I’m very much for the United Kingdom. I think it derives a lot of strength in its diverse cultures and history. However, an independent Scotland could embrace the closer unity with Europe I’d like to see, adopt the Euro, and through it rediscover much of the ‘can do’ attitude that the country built a reputation for historically.

Comment Excerpt:
I think that is more to do with the domination of Labour and socialism in Scotland. That has to go before the ‘can do’ attitude will return. I’ve heard lots of praise for Polish immigrants in to Scotland about their work ethic. The Poles in return are totally confused about why there are people that think it is mad to actually get up and do an honest day’s work. To get those layabouts to accept that they need to get off their backside and do something productive will be a good first step towards reviving that ‘can do’ attitude.

Scottish Independence

Source: http://jamiecspoliticalhotspot.blogspot.com/2006/11/scottish-independence_09.html

Excerpt:
The SNP generally proposes what I think of as "Braveheart Nationalism." This doesn't mean that they take William Wallace, the great Scottish patriot, as their guide and inspiration. Rather, it means that they take their inspiration from Mel Gibson's 'interpretation' - i.e. an Australian who has lived most of his life in the US, taking a story, throwing most of it away, and then heading to Ireland to film it because both countries look the same. Not quite the Caledonian Cause that might have been expected. This Braveheart Nationalism is reflected in a petty nationalism. So, there are not grand plans for an independent nation forging its own path in the world, but rather a self definition in terms of hostility towards England.

Comment Excerpt:
Where did you get this nonsense from? The SNP are not hostile toward England or the English. I certainly am not. True, I'd rather have them as neighbours than housemates. But that is not an indication of hostility. Let them arrange their house as they like, and I'll arrange my house as I like.

They can't take our freedom!

Excerpt:
A recent survey has been conducted that showed that Scottish people want to become independent from Britain (yeah, cos THAT was necessary). They want their own economy, they want their own armed forces, their own healthcare and education system, they want to have absolutely nothing to do with England or the English because, as everyone on the planet knows, they HATE us.

Comment excerpt:
England is a country, and I don't hate countries. The English are a people and as a group I don't hate the English. There may be the odd one here-or-there that I hate, just as there is the odd Scot here-or-there that I hate.

"I can't help wondering: why don't we give it to them?" - That is exactly what I want. I want to be part of an Independent Scotland that can interact with England and the English as the Irish do, or the Canadians, or Australians. It didn't hurt those countries to become independent of the British Empire.

What's happening here?

This is my scrap book of all the blogs that I have commented on. You may think it is a bit narcissistic but I just want to keep track of everything I've commented on.
